Hummus

Being able to make hummus from scratch has become one of the most valuable things I’ve ever learned! The best part is that it’s easy, cheap compared to buying it pre-made, and delicious! It’s a great appetizer to go with veggies or pita chips, or you can serve it with falafel or spread it on a sandwich.

The most basic recipe consists of 4 ingredients: garbanzo beans, lemon juice, garlic, and olive oil. Blend together and voila. However, to add a bit more depth, consider adding, cumin and paprika, and tahini if you’re feeling up to it.

Toss all ingredients in a food processor, adding a bit of the left over garbanzo bean juice in small increments to reach the consistency you like. You can also make hummus with a hand blender, but be careful choosing what kind of bowl you use—metal probably isn’t the best to drag a metal edge across. Also come prepared with your patience.

2 cans garbanzo beans, liquid drained and set aside
3-5 tablespoons lemon juice (to taste)
¼ cup tahini (optional)
¼ cup olive oil
4 garlic cloves, minced
½ tablespoon paprika
½ tablespoon cumin

Combine all ingredients in a food processor, pulse about 5 seconds.
Add extra garbanzo bean liquid until consistency is desired.
Pulse for another 5 seconds.
